For loved ones

Help make conversations easier while respecting the other person’s choices.

Make it easier to take part

Get the person’s attention and face them before speaking. Speak clearly at a natural pace. Shouting can distort words.

Reduce background noise where possible and let one person speak at a time. Write down important names, times and decisions.

Ask what helps

Hearing needs vary. Ask which seating, volume or way of talking works best, and let the person describe their own preferences.

If hearing difficulties affect daily life, you can suggest an assessment without pressure. Offer to go along if they wish.
